Even the most positive employees have an off day. You know those days where you just can’t motivate yourself and have nothing to look forward to? When this happens to you, try one of the following suggestions in order to perk yourself up
Creating an event or activity for your colleagues to take part in will not only give you something creative to do, but will also benefit those around you. An internal competition, a challenge for charity or just an after work activity are all effective ways to engage people and get creative.
Strawberries, bananas, sunflower seeds, cherry tomatoes, oregano, dark chocolate, eggs, asparagus and honey are all easily accessible foods that are known to provide energy and/or improve your mood. Grab yourself a hand of bananas or a punnet of strawberries and dig in! Studies have shown that certain nutrients, such as omega-3, B vitamins, vitamin D, and certain proteins can improve your mood.
Catch some air
Getting outside for some fresh air and a bit of vitamin D is a great way to feel better. Research suggests that sunlight stimulates the pineal gland in the brain to produce certain chemicals called tryptamines. These chemicals improve our mood. Go for a walk and clear your head of all the negative thoughts.
Also try to think of positive tasks to undertake when you get back to your desk, get creative!
Listen to some tunes
Listening to uplifting music is also a proven way to improve your mood. Avoid slow songs about despair and misery (obviously) and go for fast paced, happy songs that will get your foot tapping away! It has been scientifically proven that music helps people feel less stressed, relaxed, and motivated. Listening to upbeat, happy songs releases dopamine, which is basically a “feel good” chemical. This chemical is also partly responsible for relaxation and motivation.
Get some exercise
Exercise is another activity that is known to improve your mood, and has the added bonus of getting you in good shape too! Join the gym, go for a run or join in with the company sports activities. Even better, start an after work sporting activity for your company. Studies have identified significant changes in the brains of people that exercise on a regular basis compared to those that do not exercise regularly. Many of these neurological differences are thought to be responsible for the positive psychological benefits associated with exercise.
