Career development

Many students will have now settled into their next academic year at college or university, but even though the stresses of writing papers, essays or even dissertations will probably be at the forefront of their mind, it’s important for students to think about working life.

One of our many education clients is University Of Buckingham, so when it comes to students and how they can progress into the working world we have a unique insight. So whether you’re a student, or a recent graduate, our top three tips below will help you to prepare to go out and win your dream job:

Create a professional network

With most companies now having an online presence, it’s important that graduates do the same. Utilising tools such as social media to create a professional network will not only allow you to connect with people in your targeted industry, but it will also assist your job search.

Find an internship or volunteer

With many young people now having a degree under their belt, you need to stand out from the crowd if you want to succeed in the working world. Completing an internship within your chosen sector will not only provide you with vital experience, but will also provide you the opportunity to grow your own professional network. If the company you would love to work for doesn’t have an internship available, don’t be too disheartened, instead approach them and ask if you could volunteer your time. This will show you are enthusiastic and dedicated, you’ll also be at the forefront of their mind when a position does become available.

Get to grips with the latest technology

It’s not only important to develop your contacts within your chosen field, it’s also vital to gain experience on the type of technology that the company you want to work for use on a day to day basis. Ciphr for example provide a wide range of different products spanning across:

which is used by a multitude of different clients. By gaining knowledge of this type of software, which plays a vital role in office life,  you gain a head start against other applicants, it will also provide your prospective employer with the confidence that you are eager to learn.
