Many employers have traditionally seen working from home as a hindrance to productivity and an excuse for employees to slack off and get away with not doing much work. The truth is, however, that flexible working and telecommuting are a required element of modern working. There are far more advantages to telecommuting than disadvantages and businesses not embracing it as part of their strategy are likely to suffer as a result. Here are just some of the benefits of telecommuting.
1) Employees are more productive
Contrary to popular belief, in general employees are more productive when working away from the office. In this Telecommuting Productivity study conducted by Chinese travel website Ctrip, those employees allowed to work from home answered 13.5% more calls than those staff who remained in the office.
As well as the amount of work that remote workers get through, they are also more likely to work longer hours when telecommuting, this may be connected to the familiar environment and the psychological effect of not being in the office and wanting to go home?
As well as the increased productivity, those employees that worked from home reported that they were happier and felt more job satisfaction. When asked, 79% of employees would work from home if their employer permitted it, that’s 79% of employees that would be happier and more content in their role.
2) Your absence levels can be reduced
Telecommuting also offer employees the freedom they may require to take care of personal responsibilities. This can reduce absence which may otherwise be taken to deal with these responsibilities, can be avoided.
For some employees the stresses attached to not only office life, but also the commute to and from the office (especially if the office is based in a city) can be the cause of a certain amount of absence. By removing these stresses you can improve the wellbeing of those employees, and potentially reduce the number of absence episodes they may take.
3) Your employer brand improves
A telecommuting policy shows a brands openness to new trends and ways of working, it also shows a level of trust in your employees. These traits are welcomed by employees and, as a result, they’ll be happier, more productive and less likely to look for alternative employment.
Your brand also becomes more attractive to applicants as they can see that your brand is flexible and has trust in your employees.
Many people now see telecommuting as a right rather than a bonus and to attract top talent, brands need to offer a flexible way of working.
4) Your brand can reduce it’s carbon footprint
Fewer employees travelling to, and occupying, the office, the environment benefits as a result. Less petrol is used by staff driving to work (which accounts for 90%+ of the employees work carbon footprint), less energy is used to power things like air conditioning and even small benefits like a reduction in disposable packaging from lunchtime are seen.
Carbon footprint reduction schemes can compliment telecommuting and it’s environmental benefits, further details on such an initiative can be found here.
5) You save money as an employer and employee
Among the savings a business could see are:
- Office running costs
- Reduced absence costs
- Increased productivity
And employees benefit from cost savings too:
- Child care
6) Greater adoption of technology
When employees telecommute it’s likely that they’ll utilise new technology to do so, and be enthusiastic to learn best practices. As the technology directly benefits them, employees are keen to get to grips with the tools that allow them freedom and flexibility, such as web apps, mobile apps and online tools.
Many individuals will also use their own laptops or mobile device, therefore tapping into the benefits of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).
7) Your talent pool increases considerably
By not restricting a brands recruitment campaigns to those applicants that can physically work in their offices the potential talent pool is increased considerably. If location is not an issue then instead of only targeting locally based people, a brand can advertise their vacancies nationally or even globally.
