Isabel Hospice success story

Isabel Hospice was set up more than 30 years ago by Isabel Last to provide local cancer care for local people. As a cancer sufferer herself, Isabel was concerned about the lack of local facilities and addressed this by starting a charity working out of her front room.

“We were very conscious that we had lots of data in lots of places and its accuracy was questionable. In discussion with the CEO we wanted to have HR as the owner of the data so that we could help the managers do their roles with accurate management information. That meant that accurate data in the right place had to be our starting point.”

“We have 120 work patterns for a workforce of around 200 people and 1,000 volunteers, which brings all sorts of complexities. We were very pleased that CIPHR seemed to quickly understand what we were facing and came up with solutions that would work for us.”

“User acceptance has been quick and positive. They seem to like owning some of their own documents and accessing their information as and when they need to. People don’t come to HR for information as often now because they can book their own holidays and manage verifications through the system. It has embedded very well.”

“The main benefit that we have found from having CIPHR has been accurate management information, which is used at board level. We would have struggled to get any meaningful data before. The functionality is great and the customer service has been superb. I would definitely recommend CIPHR to other organisations.”

Sue: Isabel Hospice is a charity for local people, provides local care for local people. Set up over 30 years ago by a lady called Isabel Last who’s herself a cancer sufferer. Thinking from where we came from, we’re now a 6 million turnover business and we provide care to, our area is Eastern Hertfordshire, 350,000 residents. It’s a lot of people, which actually leaves for a very complex organisation. We have 120 work patterns for a workforce of around 200 people. That in itself brings all kinds of complexity, so we needed to work with a provider that could accommodate all of those quirks of our working patterns.

Karen: We decided to take the SaaS approach mainly, really, for the security of the information. We have several systems here for different purposes, and we do have problems from time to time with that sort of overload of the other system. So we thought it would be a safer approach. We thought, you know, we didn’t have to do any of the upgrades, that the work part of it was taken away and really, it wouldn’t impact any of our other systems and it just made financial sense as well.

Sue: We were very conscious that we had lots of data in lots of places and the accuracy was very much under question. So in discussions with the CEO, we wanted to have HR as the owner of the data, and that the data was accurate and enabled us to provide important management information which to me, the importance is summed up by the fact that it’s now used at board level and we can provide accurate information that people understand, rather than lots of bits of paper on the spreadsheet that may or may not be accurate.

Karen: The implementation was fully supported. We took, you know, from just awful data everywhere, spreadsheets, unreliable information and we just now have it in one repository. I think our staff like being able to own some of their own documents and in terms of being able to access them, and we no longer have lots of people trundling up to HR asking for their last year’s appraiser because they can’t find it. Because it’s now on CIPHR, they can access it themselves.

Sue: There’s more and more things that we can do with the system and I’m sure as we go on there will be even more benefits that we can gain from it.

Karen: Yes, we’ve been fully supported by our client management team throughout the whole project and continue to be. The implementation of the CIPHR product really made us look deeply at the way we were doing things and our processes internally. The support from the service desk has been absolutely brilliant. Right from the very beginning when we were fighting [SP] them constantly, especially we were trying to build and configure the system, you know, just especially for us. But we purchased the customer service pack and that was very useful especially in terms of the additional, sort of, training. We would have as much training as you needed, which was very valuable. We had some new members of staff that were on board who had, you know, no sort of experience, you know, prior experience of the system so we were able to and to send them on the training with no additional cost. So, yes, CIPHR is definitely a product that I would recommend to other organisations.
