About Southern Methodist University
Our client, Southern Methodist University, approached us to create a course for their students about our unconscious biases and how we can make a more welcoming and inclusive campus by being aware of these biases. The course is part of a blended solution comprising an online module followed by a classroom workshop.
Titled ‘Hidden scripts’, this course explains how every person subconsciously follows and how these scripts are informed by unconscious biases. The scripts guide us through all different ‘scenes’ of our life and set our expectations for how we and others interact with each other. However sometimes we also have hidden, personal scripts for how we categorise certain people that can either privilege or harm others.
The course
This course teaches us to be aware of these scripts and the types of unconscious bias that they can indicate. Once we’re aware of these scripts, we can take steps to mitigate these biases.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students were able to understand:
- Why we have unconscious biases
- How they are formed and contributed towards our survival as a species
- Strategies we can implement to minimise these biases
