HR software provider Ciphr polled 271 HR decision makers who work at UK businesses with 50+ employees to find out what causes them the most stress and anxiety at work.
The research suggests that most (94%) HR professionals are stressed by at least one thing at work, while over two-thirds (68%) are affected by three or more work-related stressors.
The three things that they find the most stressful include their workloads, managing rising costs, and employee retention and staff turnover.

What's causing the most stress at work for HR professionals?
HR professionals based at larger organisations are the most likely to report experiencing burnout and exhaustion due to stress
While those at smaller organisations (with 50-125 employees) are the most likely to cite rising costs (such as increased minimum wage rates and employer NICs changes) as a cause of their stress (32%, compared to the survey average of 26%)Age (and experience) also influences what causes HR professionals the most stress and anxiety at work
Only 2.4% of HR professionals aged 35-44 years old are unaffected by stress at work (vs 5.3% of those under 35 and 10% of those over 45)
Ciphr commissioned Onepoll to conduct an independent survey of 300 HR decision makers (employed at UK organisations). The survey ran between 17-19 December 2024.
Nearly half (46%) of respondents are employed at UK organisations with over 250 employees (of those, 22% work at enterprises with 1,500+ employees), two-fifths (44%) are at organisations with 50 to 249 employees, and a tenth (10%) are at organisations with less than 50 employees.
