About the University of Exeter
Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing humanity today. In response to the urgent need for climate action, the University of Exeter commissioned a comprehensive carbon literacy course developed by us.
Course aims
The course aims to raise awareness, educate, and empower individuals to become climate advocates and play a crucial role in combating climate change. This case study explores the significance of carbon literacy, the course objectives, and a summary of its content.
Course structure
The carbon literacy course is structured into 10 modules, each addressing different aspects of climate change and its implications:
1. Introduction to climate change
Addresses the immediate climate and environment emergency, emphasising its visible impacts in the UK and globally
2. The science bit
Explores the scientific processes behind climate change to build a foundational understanding
3. Impacts of climate change
Highlights the real and visible effects of climate change on weather patterns and ecosystems
4. Forecasting the future
Presents possible future scenarios, urging proactive measures to mitigate consequences
5. Emissions and climate equity
Addresses disparities in emissions production and the impact on climate equity, giving rise to local activists
6. UK government strategy, green recovery and activism
Examines the UK government’s strategies and legislation and the role of environmental campaigners and eco-activists
7. The role of organisations and the university
Focusses on organisations’ impact on climate, including the concept of ‘greenwashing’, and the University of Exeter’s efforts
8. My footprint
Helps learners understand their carbon footprints and dispels misconceptions about certain choices
9. What can we do?
An interactive workshop-style module encouraging peer engagement and exploring behavioural choices and influence
10. Quiz and pledges
Concludes the course with an end-of-course quiz and encourages participants to make climate pledges
As learners progress through the 10 modules, they acquire a holistic understanding of climate change, its impacts, and the role of individuals, organisations, and governments in addressing the crisis. The course fosters a sense of responsibility and encourages active engagement with peers, promoting a collective effort towards a sustainable future.
The inclusion of additional resources in each module also allows participants to explore specific areas of interest and relevance, deepening their understanding and commitment to making a positive impact.
